art policy debate

Dear Board Members,

Our next meeting is this Saturday (6/16/01) at 1:00 at AIC, 1630 W. Wilson. Martha Kenton from LAN65 will be there to review our class proposals and to advise us as to the process required for DCFS certification. The proposals for the three classes projected will be provided at our meeting.

The Stockholm Challenge did not select our website as a finalist website. It was a good process to under-go because it forced me to give added attention to our weaknesses and to define our strengths. Our weakest areas are the opportunities for interaction, comments, articles on racism and especially our "Personal Stories of Racism" section. A review of our logs reveals that a number of people who come to our site are searching for stories of racism. Presently - if they come to our site - they go away disappointed. No one is contributing stories. We need a plan to change this. Enclosed is an editorial written by Deborah Drew, which I hope will inspire others to submit editorials and comments of their own for us to publish on issues related to racism, especially local issues!

We need testers to explore our site and take notes on any confusions they experience, and report what works so we can improve the navigation links on our site.

The Native Technology Consortium (NTC) completed its first class in "Windows 98 and File Management." A second class in "Wordprocessing" begins this week. We have a volunteer who is able to teach Photoshop. Joe Podlasek points out that Printshop is the graphics program most useful to our NTC community but Photoshop and other graphics programs are of interest to our community of artists. I hope to prepare a space for such classes on the third floor by September.

Our Hotline 21 cable TV series will begin on July 3rd from 7:30 - 8:00 PM. The focus is our website. I will explore how to develop a website while introducing our site's content and featuring artists represented on our website. Deborah has volunteered to be our phone person but we need backup people in case Deborah can't make it, help to tape the show, volunteers to call in and guest artists from our website to appear on our program.

The Labor and Arts Festival is once again promoting our T-shirt Art Harvest Festival this year. Unity will be hosting a Pow-Wow on our opening night in celebration of Native American Day. We are seeking suggestions for Native Poets to read on that Friday night, (8/29/01).

Sincerely

Chris Drew
