Bezazian
Library Exhibit
|
| The Bezazian Library hosts a uniquely powerful exhibit of art on T-shirts. The exhibit's theme is pro-diversity and anti-racism. Mounted by the Uptown Multi-Cultural Art Center (UM-CAC) the exhibit is selected from ART-ACT, the Anti-Racist T-shirt Art Contest Tour, an international art contest that has collected art online at art-teez.org for eight years. UM-CAC has produced art-teez.org since 1997 to promote its art activities. Since early 1999 ART-ACT has been offering a prize for t-shirt art that fights against racism or promotes diversity. The stated goal of ART-ACT is to build a mountain of visual evidence online in support of diversity and against racism. The Bezazian Library exhibit is the first time this online art has been printed on t-shirts and shown in real space. The result is thought provoking and discussion starting. The public is invited to view the show during library hours and to attend the reception Saturday December 16th, from 2-4pm to learn more about the art, UM-CAC and ART-ACT. Curator, Chris Drew, hopes the exhibit will travel after this initial showing. UM-CAC is a 20-year effort by volunteers (mostly artists) working with few funds to promote wearable art by Chicago area artists. It originated the "Art of the T-shirt" exhibits in the late 1980's. Throughout the 1990's to the present day UM-CAC has hosted a free "Screen Print Workshop for Artists." More volunteers and additional support are needed to continue to grow UM-CAC's unique community art activities. The Bezazian Library is located at 1226 W. Ainslie Avenue, half a block west of Broadway and two blocks north of Lawrence Avenue in Uptown. Call 312/744-0019 for library hours and 773/561-7676 to contact UM-CAC about further opportunities to show this socially significant body of art or to volunteer to help. Visit art-teez.org to see all the ART-ACT art online and many more local artists' screen-printed, t-shirt art. View the History of ART-ACT Art |
