It is a shining example of a City exploring "cultural democracy." After taking testimony from people in all walks of life a committee of cultural leaders summarized these many statements into 103 practical suggestions on how the City could better encourage the arts for all its citizens. From the Plans Statement of Principles The individual artist is at the foundation of our cultural heritage. The ability of artists to pursue the arts as a career and earn a living wage is basic to the growth and stability of our cultural diversity… Cultural activities should be accessible to the disabled, the elderly and low-income people, both as audience and participants. Cultural vitality is important to our economy and community development. The cultural sector employs thousands; cultural organizations bring identity to downtown and the neighborhoods; and our cultural diversity helps business maintain a quality workforce that wants to live in Chicago... City resources available for cultural support should be distributed on a fair and equitable basis, both among diverse cultures and between citywide and neighborhood-based cultural institutions… Fred Fine wrote in the introduction to the Plan: The Chicago Cultural Plan is without precedent in its scope and the grassroots process by which it was crafted. It took shape from the recommendations and observations of thousands of Chicago citizens as well as hundreds of cultural, civic and community groups. It goes to the heart of the rationale for establishing the Department of Cultural Affairs, which grew out of a recommendation by Mayor Washington's 1983 Transition Team Report… This plan is not a finished document. In our rapidly changing urban environment, it must be viewed as a thoughtful beginning ... a dynamic plan that will continue to respond to fluctuating circumstances and ongoing funding requirements. One very important task has already been achieved by the Plan - and that is the very process…. Perhaps most importantly, our meetings were attended not only by artists and arts administrators but also by many who for the first time talked about what art and culture could do for their community and their personal lives. This summary of the plan will be supplemented with ongoing policy papers and expanded treatment of many concerns barely touched upon here… View the entire Chicago Cultural Plan at http://www.art-teez.org/cul_plan.htm T-shirt Art Harvest Fest Theme - "Don't Mourn - ORGANIZE!" See press release at http://art-teez.org/pr/harvest_fest-05.htm the 16th annual "T-shirt Art Harvest Fest" with the theme, "Don’t Mourn – Organize," will show all weekend on September 16-18th with t-shirt art by Chicagoland artists. "Don’t Mourn – Organize!" – reflects themes in the art and life of the late Carlos Cortez, a long time member of our board. This exhibit will kick-off a long term organizing effort to persuade the City of Chicago to allow artists to sell their art freely in public parks, most importantly, along Chicago's lakefront. Artists are invited to display any of their art on t-shirts and allow other art to be submitted if it reflects the artist’s concept of "Don’t Mourn – Organize." Our T-shirt Art Flyer Exhibit will promote a drive to allow artists to sell their art freely along the lakefront public parks as an alternative to costly street and art fairs that help few emerging artists and prevent public contact with the majority of local artists. Our vehicle is Mayor Washington’s "Chicago Cultural Plan" which is posted on art-teez.org/cul_plan.htm. Enter your art and tell others about this event. The complete press release is at http://www.art-teez.org/pr/harvest_fest-05.htm NOTES FROM THE FIELD A new sheet of Art Flyers have joined the T-shirt Art Flyer Exhibit. Three of Carlos Cortez works with Kaminelana Cheatem - Honor Our Elders. The national and local weekly print outlets have been contacted with our press release. The major local papers and TV morning shows will be contacted this week. We will have a very visual opportunity for any station looking for an exciting topic. Our best publicity is done by networking. We are communicating with the Mexican Fine Arts Center to pass the word of our exhibit. We need to connect with as many of the networks Carlos Cortez was involved with to succeed. The fliers and what we do with them in these last few weeks are the ultimate straw in attendance. Flyers will be available at all volunteer times. Any one who can forward our press release or even word of mouth or a link to our event in their communications can help us big-time. Thanks for every effort big or small. Report From The Field Evanston (part 2) Coming soon, "Will Chris D. get arrested when he returns on Sunday at the Evanston Ethnic Arts Festival?" PRIME TIME TV FEATURING YOU Workshop artists are INVITED to promote their art on our cable TV program on Thursday evenings (prime time) beginning July 7th at 6:30 on Channel 21. We will do 6 more shows. Contact us soon to show your art to the entire City of Chicago. Our program is one part screen print lesson, one part UM-CAC announcements and one part your art (featured artist). Chris Drew is the host and he will keep it fun for you. Call us at 773-561-7676 now. VOLUNTEER FUN See the Calendar of Volunteer Days for volunteer opportunity times at the beginning of this newsletter. T-shirt Art Harvest Festival Deadline 9/13/05 - any art on a t-shirt. Other art on the theme "Don't Mourn - Organize!" BACKGROUND We are building our organization slowly to be able to sell art on t-shirts to help fund an inner-city arts agency that hosts art classes for youth and other community residents. We have dedicated ourselves to this task without pay for 15 years because we know it is needed and that government and civic leaders have ignored our needs. We ask artists to respect this mission. ARTISTS - Sell Your Art You receive $2.00 per t-shirt sold retail. We will be promoting the art we have licensed with increasing intensity in the coming months and years. Who is "we". We is any of you(pl.) who help. Our license agreement is "artist friendly" in that is pays an above industry standard and is not an exclusive contract. The artist is free to market their designs anywhere else including on their own website. We want to link your pages on our site to your site. How can you participate? Come to our Screen Print Workshop for Artists on Sundays from 3-6pm and learn how to print your art. Already know how to screen print? Come and show us your work. Your pens can change our world! Visit our Screen Print Workshop for Artists to find out more. ; >" C. Drew umcac@art-teez.org http://www.art-teez.org We dress Chicago and the Internet in Progressive T-shirt Art |
