ART-ACT Notes 13 -- Newsletter of the "Anti-Racist T-shirt Art Contest Tour"
© 1999 by the Uptown Multi-Cultural Art Center - All Rights Reserved
Check out ART-ACT's latest submission - Katrina Joyner's t-shirt art
submission "Mothers Child" at
http://www.art-teez.org/artists/kj1.htm
She says:
"My name is Katrina Joyner, born Pearl Harbor Day. I've been drawing things
all my life, not necessarily realistically, and rather enjoy it.
My pencil sketch, "He Says His Name Is Ruth!", came in runner up in the
1997 Art of Pen Contest.
This contest struck a cord in me. Growing up an Urban Native American
Indian can be rough. I've been literally stoned at my locker just for the
little difference. . . in high school. I know how horrible racism can be.
I've been on both sides of the fence.
I hope my "Mother's Child" reflects that for all the fact that even though
we wear blond pigtails or curly hair or braids or a bowl cut, we all have a
mother who loves us. And can be hurt along with us. We all are in the
circle of life based on the Big Mother, mother earth."
If at first you do not succeed - keep trying. For nearly a year volunteers
have worked steadily at building this exhibit and contest. There is plenty
more to do but artists are beginning to respond. So are others. We are
getting more requests for subscriptions to ART-ACT Notes. As this grows we
continue to encourage anyone viewing the artists images to respond to one or
more images with comments on the artists work as they see it. Asking the
artist questions in these comments is acceptable. A discussion beneath every
image is our intended goal.
Speak out and win a free t-shirt from our "Screen Print Workshop for
Artists." A free t-shirt to the first and twenty-first commentator on
artwork in our ART-ACT exhibit. Just click on COMMENTS below any image in
ART-ACT and send us your thoughts.
SUPPORT DIVERSITY -- FIGHT RACISM

art to excite discussion of the many issues related to racism and diversity?
Tell them about us or send us their e-mail address and we will contact them.
Their students' written comments could be published on our site below the
art they apply to!
