COMMUNITY ARTS DISCUSSION
Why is Art Dangerous to those in Power?
The latest publication defining the community art goals of the Uptown Multi-Cultural Art is in A Modest Proposal - Give us Our First Amendment Right to Survive by Our Art This was written in 2010 while the Cook County State's Attorney's Office is attempting to sentence our Executive Director, Mr. Drew, who wrote this piece to as much as 15 years in prison for audio-recording his arrest for selling art for $1 while testing the unconstitutional peddlers license.
Mr. Drew - as you can see below - has been a critic of the City of Chicago's anti-artist cultural activities since Mayor Daley began dismantling the advances of the Washington Administration. Below is a link the Mayor Washington's cultural plan for Chicago. After that, in the mid 1990's, Mr. Drew drew responds to an attempt to gloss over the distruction of Washington's community arts agenda with a glossy portrail of the Daley Administrations art policies. Drew calls then for an artists' market on the lakefront. Fifteen years later artists are still unable to access public spaces in a practical way to establish public art scenes and Cook County is trying to silence Mr. Drew with prison time for speaking out.
