Solstice Corn by Diana Berek
Artist's Statement
Solstice Corn (also entitled cornsisters@earth.sol) Acrylic on canvas
1998:18" x 18"
This was the third painting in the Earth .sol series.
The two ears of corn represent human relations and our tendency to
divide ourselves into "us" and "them". If we live a life of ripening
in our right relations (in justice) to each other and to the the
earth, then we would be able to bear fruit as partners, as
corn-sisters under the solstice sun. The solstice sun is symbolic of
the point at which a qualitative change occurs. At the time of the
solstice, the earth begins the process of seasonal change. If we
understand what we must do to protect the earth's resources for
future gnerations, then we can begin the process of conscious,
intellectual change in our understanding of our place on the earth
and in the cosmos.
This painting is an icon on the cosmic computer screen for the
program that inserts into our thinking the ideals of harmony and
justice.
