To Dance : Imagining Freedom by Diana Berek
Artist's Statement
"To Dance: Imagining Freedom", Oil on canvas, 1994: 44" x 38"
This piece celebrates the possibility of achieving freedom. Freedom
is what we yearn for, strive for, work, and die for. Freedom is not
a commodity although we often believe that a commodity--whether it is
a car, a cell phone, a washing machine or the latest personal hygiene
product---will give us freedom. Freedom is something incorporeal and
qualitative which must be experienced individually, respected
collectively, and supported socially.
In this painting, the fish are developing wings which symbolize their
transition from one form of consciousness to another. They are
responding to the five dancing feminine figures at the water's edge
who call us to seek enlightenment and self actualization through
collective organization and harmony.
We are in the presence of new conditions and new technological tools
(the turbulent skies). From above the yellow and red rays of light
stream down upon the scene: cosmic approval of our transcendance
into a new quality of life.
