Artist's Bio
I am a native of Chicago, having grown up in the Logan Square
neighborhood where I lived until my mid 20's. I then moved to the
Uptown neighborhood and moved around quite a lot while working full
time and finishing my B.A degree at Loyola University in the evening
school. I received my bachelor's degree in the Humanities with a
major in Philosophy, but I have always been a self-taught artist. I
received some art instruction in High School, but primarily I taught
myself by the trial and error method, trying everything until I
achieved something I liked. I married, moved to Washington D.C. for
12 years, had 2 children and stopped painting during this period. I
resumed painting in the mid 80's.
I consider myself a blue-collar artist, not the least because I am
self taught, but also because I come from a blue-collar working class
background and I have always worked a "day job". For a while, I
worked in the corporate sector, gaining some insight into the
particular contradictions that are inherent in that bribed sector of
the working class, but like many during the 90's I was impacted,
downsized, outplaced and laid off, in other words, I wound up
unemployed.
While I am a native Chicagoan, my mother's family is from rural,
northern Wisconsin and I spent many summers with one or another aunt,
while my mother worked in a plastics factory. The summers in the
Chippewa valley area of Wisconsin instilled an early appreciation for
the land, for grasses and grains and the visual delight of fields,
and open skies and the changing light from dawn to mid-day, dusk and
twilight.
