Mandala for Who We Are by Diana Berek
Mandala for Who We Are by Diana Berek
Diana Berek -- E-mail to rosetree@mcs.com
She writes: "I am a self taught, Chicago born artist who has also lived in Washington DC; Northwestern Pennsylvania; and Elgin Illinois. I have worked in the human services field in mental health, substance abuse treatment, education, and with private sector corporations. A graduate of the Evening Division of Loyola University with a B.A. in Humanities, I have done post graduate work in Law and Education. In 1989, I chose to commit my time and energy to painting as my primary vocation, working in several part-time jobs in order to support a simple lifestyle devoted to art and activism.
Artist's Statement
As a teenager growing up in the Logan Square neighborhood of Chicago in the 60's, I spent as much time as possible in the Art Institute viewing the paintings, drawings and sculpture, trying to discern the artists' visions. I also drew and painted copies of those works to "possess" them and to learn from them.
Art is able to introduce new ideas. Ideas are powerful. There is a potent synergy and a transforming power in the offering of an idea which takes hold in another's mind. This makes art a powerful form of activism. I am now committed to being an artist -- committed to relearning, pursuing and refining my painting as an expression of my artistic vision into a political voice.
