Artist's Statement I've lived in Chicago all of my life. My parents are from Louisiana. They moved here after my dad found a job as a steelworker. My mother raised me to be proud of my Choctaw ancestors, my Seminole ancestors and my African ancestors. She taught me to be brave and strong whenever I encountered people (white and black) who told me I should be ashamed of being Indian. She also taught me to be just as brave and strong whenever I encounter people (white, red and brown) who told me I should be ashamed of being black. A lot of the inspiration for my drawings and paintings comes from my childhood and teenage experiences of growing up as a Black Indian in Chicago. |
