The Case Against Chief Illiniwek
By Lydia Janchitraponvej
For too long a period of time history has not looked favorably upon the Native American.
We had misplaced out trust and we are still paying the price for that mistake.
Stereotyped throughout the ages, we have unfortunately become an enduring symbol of all that is primitive, behind the times, and savage.
Our values and beliefs have taken center stage for your ridicule, your flagrant remarks and your total lack of regard for our ways of life, as is exemplified by your mascot.
We respect our elders and honor their place in our lives. We value life and cherish it in all its forms.
You will find very few Native Americans behind bars, we understand the importance of what we do and the profound importance it will have on our children, and our children's children.
Most people today value only one life form - theirs - and they will walk all over anyone who gets in the way to their goal. That begs the question - who's the real primitive person, the savage?
When you came to this country with no knowledge of the terrain who helped you back on your feet - without us you would never have made it. Is this is the thanks you gave us?
We are human beings who demand respect and not your current form of half-time entertainment.
