Zebra by Luis Vera Prendes

Artist's Statement

Zebras are magical creatures in which black and white appear in perfect harmony and equilibrium. I think Zebras should be an example and inspiration to all human beings and a symbol for anti-racist movements.

Luis Vera Prendes paints in a unique style that spans the conceptual spectrum, with works drawn from observation and reality, narrative figuration, and a spiritually rich imagination. In bold colors bounded and enlivened by heavy black strokes that at once define and deconstruct the figures and the space in his work, Vera Prendes portrays still lifes and animals, people and celestial beings. Like the leaded design of a stained glass window, Vera Prendes' works experiment with the contrast between color and blackness, light and obscurity, translucence and opacity. Far from static, Vera Prendes' compositions are distinctive for their complexities of tone and layer, their shifting color fields, and their dramatic eddies of form and brushstroke. Born in Mexico City, Vera Prendes is a self-taught artist who works in sculpture in addition to painting.

Zebra: Zebras are magical creatures in which black and white appear in perfect harmony and equilibrium. I think Zebras should be an example and inspiration to all human beings and a symbol for anti-racist movements.
