Art is a necessary media for life. Humans cannot feel their existence without expressing their soul. When a painter places a stroke onto the canvas, their soul becomes revealed. However, if expressing one’s self becomes diminished in a society, the usual end result is destruction and many souls become lost.

Everyone has a talent; the trick is they must unearth it. Knowing the fundamentals is a crucial part of the developmental process. Practicing one’s skills provides artists with the principles and when to break them. Once the practical aspect is focused upon, artists can venture into the conceptual unknown. It is crucial that when artists conceptualize, they must understand the mental process of achieving a visual image. This not only allows artists a clearer understanding of creating art, but also provides insight on how to critique other works.

Artists should also obtain a balance of various educational subjects. Every person can gain a fresh perspective by developing their knowledge base. There are numerous examples of how art can be integrated with other educational subjects. For example the role of mathematics and its importance to proportions, or having knowledge of politics to create a parody piece, etc. One should never become too isolated in the subject of art itself, or one’s options become extremely limited.

It is mandatory that artists experience the world around them. Experience provides the best stimulating experience. Thus, when you let someone view your work, you want them to experience you. This is why it is important to create your own unique individuality.

I create most of my work digitally. Computer programs such as; QuarkXpress, Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop have become graphic designers' new tools just as a painter strokes their brush on a canvas. The advances in technology make it easier for the masses to manipulate images.

My art conceptualizes various opinions about mass media, corporations, and assembly production. My favorite genre is spoofing corporate logos. Making a parody about various Fortune 500 companies provides an outlet to make a corporate stand. Too many companies are being allowed to merge, thus making it almost a legal monopoly. I am disheartened that America is becoming the land of minimizing choices.

The process of creating art can have different approaches, but I usually begin by creating an art piece by conceptualizing an idea (this may occur any time). As I conceptualize, I also do research so I am not misrepresenting what I am attempting to communicate. I communicate my idea clearly with visual materials; sometimes it helps to brainstorm different ideas through a pencil sketch. I then create the idea onto a media that best compliments the work.

My art embodies ideas based on my perspective. I select exuberant colors and shapes that are relevant to my ideas. When I create, I hope to trigger the audience’s emotions. I feel that the relationship with the viewer is critical. If any viewer experiences a connection with my work, I know that my art is successful.

AUTOBIOGRAPHY

I was born into this world as a shock to my doctor and parents. You see I am a twin, and usually when there is not history of twins in the family, one can assume that the twins are identical. The doctor ran an ultra-sound test on my twin sister and discovered that she was a girl, so they just figured I was also the same gender. When I came out the hatch, my mom said, "that's no girl." So the answer to the most frequently asked questions as a twin are: no, we are not identical and I was born five minutes before my sister!

My name is Kevin Scott Fogelson, and I was born and raised in Buffalo Grove, a forty-five minute drive from Chicago. Nothing too spectacular has happened in my life, and if it did, I wouldn't brag about it. I have a loving family and have been fortunate to be surrounded with some enlightened contemporaries.

My hobbies include soccer, art, playing video games and being a professional student (which carries a permanent debt price-tag). Without a clue to the world and completing undergrad at Lake Forest College, I decided that I would do something that would be beneficial to achieve my goal, that one day I would teach as a college professor. I have recently obtained a Masters of Education in Art at Loyola University of Chicago and I taught at a college, The Illinois Institute of Art in Schaumburg.

Art has always been an influence in my life. To me, it is one of the most appealing concepts out there. Ever since I started going to museums in Junior High, I have enjoyed my experiences of viewing and creating art. My interests began to pick up as I started taking more art courses in high school and this fervor continued throughout college. I recall late nights where I would go beyond the course work to create various versions of art pieces.

Art is an intimate aspect of me; however, I do enjoy sharing my works and ideas with others. I also enjoy feedback on my work; however, I consider it more productive if the criticism is constructive. If one criticizes a piece, I recommend that they better provide evidence when they critique any work of art.
