Tim Jackson -- To see more visit Creative License StudioAs early as high school, native Dayton, Ohioan, Tim Jackson had developed an interest in writing stories and cartoons with social meaning. Particularly meaning to people of Color. "In those days, there weren't many comic strips or comic books that had African Americans in positive lead roles. (And looking through most major newspapers, it appears nothing has changed even in the 90's!) "I wanted to devote my cartoons to a multi-cultural cast of character." His first comic strip about teen issues was published on the editorial page of the Dayton Daily News. Tim was 16 at the time. In 1979, Tim relocated to Chicago to attend the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, majoring in film and animations. "My dream was to learn animation so that I could work towards bringing programs to television that featured people of Color in roles more than that of the sidekick to the blond-haired hero that saves the world, that continues to be presented to our children to this day." Applying the various skills he learned to cartooning, Tim began to develop a series of comic books called the "what Are Friends For?" stories of social awareness that explored topics such as self-esteem, sexuality, drug & alcohol use and AIDS awareness. In 1990, again seeing that the mainstream media lacked representation of people of Color on the editorial pages, as far as a cartoon feature goes, Tim set out to syndicate his own editorial style comic, specifically directed at the more than 2,400 Black owned publications nationwide. |
