End The Cycle by Daniel Guadalupe Chavez

Artist's Statement
I am a 23 yr. old American born male of Mexican descent. Currently enlisted in the U.S.
Navy, a Third Class Petty Officer, I work amonst male and female salors of nationalities from
all around the world. Though we're all from differnt origins we get along well, leaving
differences behind. This is an extremely necessary requirment, our lives depend on each
other, an idea not often practiced outside of our militeristic society. Like all military
personnel, I too lived in the "civilian world." I grew up in the barrios of Southern
California, as a child and teenager I possessed a negative attitude toward other
nationalities. A way of thinking passed on to me by my father and other family members
and friends. At age 13 I met an old man, a former "retired" gang member who had cleaned
up his act. This man taught me the true nature of life and peace. He told me that it
was me, us, the youth who had to learn, the elders have that negative state of mind
engraved into their souls. His last words to me were, "Know this, little Vito, it's up
to all of you, end the cycle of hate." For the future of our children for him, I drew this.
